Vocalists Catherine Russell, Charenee Wade, and Brianna Thomas channel 1920s blues divas Bessie Smith (the “Empress of the Blues”); Mamie Smith (the “Queen of the Blues”); Ma Rainey (the “Mother of the Blues”); stage and screen icon, Ethel Waters, and legends like Billie Holiday, Alberta Hunter, and Ida Cox. Originally presented at Jazz At Lincoln Center, this concert features an amazing 7-piece band including horn charts adapted from the original recordings.
Grammy Award winning vocalist Catherine Russell has toured the world, performing and recording with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, The Holmes Brothers, Wynton Marsalis, and Rosanne Cash, among others, appearing on over 200 albums. Since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat, on Harmonia Mundi's World Village label, six acclaimed and chart topping albums have followed, including Strictly Romancin’, awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal 2012 (Vocal Album of The Year) by the Jazz Academy in France, and Bring It Back in 2014. Catherine Russell was a featured artist on a Grammy Award winning soundtrack album for the HBO-TV series, Boardwalk Empire. Her 6th album, Harlem On My Mind, was released in September 2016 and received a Grammy® Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Brianna Thomas’ talents have propelled her to many successes including performances at the Montreux, North Sea, and Umbria Jazz Festivals and in venues ranging from the Bahamas to Geneva, Switzerland. Brianna’s extensive list of stateside performances includes appearances with Fred Anderson, Von Freeman, Houston Person and the Barber Brothers. She has performed across the country from New Orleans to Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center.
Ada Dyer is a deeply soulful vocalist, proficient and at home with R&B, Gospel, Funk Jams, and Popular Song. The Chicago born performer's emotional and sultry style is reminiscent of revered talents like Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin. She released two solo albums on Motown Records and also recorded with such artists as Steely Dan, Cher, Sting, Luther Vandross, Amy Grant, Marc Cohn, Roberta Flack, and Michael Bolton. Leading her own band, she has toured internationally, and she has also performed with the likes of Sting, Chaka Khan, Lenny Kravitz, Roberta Flack, J Geils Band, Boz Scaggs, and The Holmes Brothers. Credits include appearing with The Holmes Brothers on Public Radio’s “A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.”
