LADIES SING THE BLUES
SATURDAY, MAY 7, 2022 8 PM $34/$39
Vocalists Catherine Russell, Charenee Wade, and Brianna Thomas channel 1920s blues divas Bessie Smith (the “Empress of the Blues”); Mamie Smith (the “Queen of the Blues”); Ma Rainey (the “Mother of the Blues”); stage and screen icon, Ethel Waters, and legends like Billie Holiday, Alberta Hunter, and Ida Cox. Originally presented at Jazz At Lincoln Center, this concert features an outstanding 7-piece band including horn charts adapted from the original recordings.
Grammy Award winning vocalist Catherine Russell has toured the world, performing and recording with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, The Holmes Brothers, Wynton Marsalis, and Rosanne Cash, among others, appearing on over 200 albums. Since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat, on Harmonia Mundi's World Village label, six acclaimed and chart topping albums have followed, including Strictly Romancin’, awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal 2012 (Vocal Album of The Year) by the Jazz Academy in France, and Bring It Back in 2014. Catherine Russell was a featured artist on a Grammy Award winning soundtrack album for the HBO-TV series, Boardwalk Empire. Her 6th album, Harlem On My Mind, was released in September 2016 and received a Grammy® Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
Brianna Thomas’ talents have propelled her to many successes including performances at the Montreux, North Sea, and Umbria Jazz Festivals, and in venues around the world - from the Bahamas to Switzerland and from New Orleans to The Kennedy Center in D.C. to New York City's Jazz At Lincoln Center. Brianna has performed with Fred Anderson, Von Freeman, Houston Person, and the Barber Brothers, among others.
Charenee Wade, known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. She has earned many accolades – first runner-up in New York’s Jazzmobile Vocal competition; a participant in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program; a feature on NPR’s Song Travels; a starring role in the off-Broadway show Café Society and in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Salute to Betty Carter.
The performance is 90 minutes, with no intermission.
